Welcome To Pet Grooming!
Have you ever seen a monster walking around on the street or rather a unkempt Poodle? When it comes to pet care, grooming is often overlooked.
While most animals clean themselves some can’t or just don’t. So it's up to you to brush/clean them. In this article I’ll teach you all about grooming, brush type and tips/tricks for bath time!
Brush types/Coat Types A mistake made by many pet owners using the wrong kind of brush for their pet. Down below is a list of the three main types of brush and what coat and hair type they are made for.
Bristle brushes
Bristle brushes can be used on all coat types, and change depending on the space between bristles and the length of the bristles. (A bristle is a short stiff hair)
Wire-pin brushes
wire-pin brushes which can have rubber-tipped ends or metal ends.
Slicker brushes
Slicker brushes have fine wire bristles and are used for removing mats, tangles and knots.
Coat Types
Short, smooth coats (most Retrievers, Hounds, Chihuahuas, etc.)The best brush is a soft to medium bristle brush.
Short, wiry coats (Terriers, etc.)The best brush is a slicker brush or a firm bristle brush with short, closely spaced bristles.
Medium to long, flowing coats (Golden Retrievers, Spaniels, Setters, Lhasa Apsos, etc.)The best brushes are a wire-pin brush or a soft to medium bristle brush with long, medium spaced bristles.
Harsh, outer coats with soft, woolly undercoats (Sheepdogs, Collies, Shepherds, Chows, Pomeranians, etc.)The best brush is a wire-pin brush or a firm bristle brush.
Bathtime! While most pets don’t like getting a bath it is an essential tool
for pet owners to know.
Cats and dogs can both be bathed, but you might want to take caution and clip your cat's nails before you give them a bath. While some cats like water the majority don’t.
Always use pet shampoo on your pets. Never use human shampoo especially scented/flavored shampoo. As human shampoo will make pet skin flake and can damage their coats.
Never give your rabbit a full body bath! Use a washcloth because this can be extremely traumatic for a rabbit and can put them into shock. This can kill rabbits and it has happened already. While you may have heard of rabbits who like to swim, most hate being submerged and the shock can be deadly.
I hope you learned some new tricks and tips to make grooming your furry friend safer and easier. Always check pet grooming products before using them and your pet will
thank you. After all would you rather have a blue ribbon winner or a disaster waiting to happen.
