Interview with a Cat Breeder
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always loved cats. This made it an easy choice for an interview topic. I’ve heard a few stories about the time my grandfather bred cats, so I decided to interview him to find out more. He had grown up around cats, and after getting his children two Siamese cats, he’d started breeding cats of his own.
When did you start breeding cats, and how long did you breed them for?
1977 and we did it for 5 years.
Were the kittens spayed or neutered before you sold them? No, clients agreed to neuter before we sold to them.
What’s your favourite memory from when you were still breeding cats? Having kittens around, they are so much fun.
Did you only sell a certain breed, and if so, which one(s)?
Russian Blues and Himalayans.
Where did most of your customers come from?
From around the province, but mostly Fredericton.
What did you do with cats that were never sold?
All kittens were sold.
What was the hardest thing about breeding cats?
Keeping them healthy and clean.
What was the easiest thing about breeding cats?
Cats are very independent and don't need a lot of care
Which one of your cats was your favorite?
A blue point Himalayan named Cassandre.
Did you do it alone or did other people help, and if so, who?
It was my hobby and I did most of the work involved unless I was ill, then my wife helped.
